acrylic canvas

Price $1500

Calvin Johnson - Calvin's lifelong love of art was first nurtured in a home filled with creativity flowing from his grandparents, parents and siblings. It grew immensely with his introduction of arts and crafts projects in the Philadelphia Public School system. As a first grade student, Calvin was assigned to design his very first mural; a colorful chalk-rendered zoo motif on the old-school blackboard partitions in the back of the classroom. The process continued with several inspiring art teachers whom Calvin encountered throughout his primary school years, Saturday morning art classes and summer art camps. His passion was refined at Millersville State College, where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1981. It was at M.S.C. that Calvin was exposed to many mediums, but it was oil and acrylic painting that captured his heart. "I became enamored with the wonderful array of colors, the fun of exploring the different techniques of their application to the canvas and developing an inner peace within myself that painting, for me, is truly a joyous discipline." After ten years of meaningful yet low paying freelance projects, Calvin was faced with self-doubt, slowly coming to the realization that he may never become successful with his talents.

New Generation by Elizabeth Catlett

New Generation by Elizabeth Catlett1993

Size: 38.75" x 25"

Known for her abstract sculpture in bronze and marble as well as prints and paintings, particularly depicting the female figure, Elizabeth Catlett is unique for distilling African American, Native American, and Mexican art in her work.

Catlett was born in Washington, DC, and later became a Mexican citizen, residing in Cuernavaca Morelos, Mexico. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Howard University in Washington DC, where there was much discussion about whether or not black artists should depict their own heritage or embrace European modernism.

She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1940 from the University of Iowa, where she had gone to study with Grant Wood, regionalist painter. His teaching dictum was "paint what you know best," and this set her on the path of dealing with her own background. In 1940, her painting "Mother and Child," depicting African-American figures, won her much recognition. She also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York City.

From 1944 to 1946, she taught at the George Washington Carver School, an alternative community school in Harlem that provided instruction for working men and women of the city. From her experiences with these people, she did a series of paintings, prints, and sculptures with the theme "I Am a Negro Woman."In 1946, she traveled to Mexico and became interested in the Mexican working classes.

In 1947, she settled permanently in Mexico, where she married artist Francisco Mora. From 1958 to 1973, she was head of the department and professor of sculpture at the National School of Fine Arts Mexico.

There she also did much printmaking, which she found an affordable medium for reaching the masses of people, and produced images of African-American and Mexican working-class women.

In 1990, those negative forces were expelled when an opportunity to become the summer camp art instructor at the historic Wissahickon Boys and Girls Club in his Germantown, Pennsylvania neighborhood.

Through this new position, Calvin was renewed and it became apparent to him that it was time to give back to those young artists in need of his instructional and creative energy. He instilled self-esteem in many, as well as empowering a sense of self-worth in the youths that encouraged them to utilize their gifts and make statements of who they were and what they wanted to achieve in life through art. "Like the singers, rappers, musicians or dancers that you see every day…brushstroke your feelings, beliefs, joys and pains on the canvas for all to see."

Mamulengos by Marcia Leivas

Artist from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil

Journalist and artist, Márcia Leivas participates in group exhibitions with artists of a variety of trends since 2005. In 2008, she made her first solo exhibition, using as its theme the life of Benjamin de Oliveira (1870-1954), founder of the school of theater and circus (circo-teatro) and the first black Brazilian clown. This man of unique personality inspired the artist in creating playful works, which rescued the rich history of a multifaceted artist, but unfortunately already forgotten by the Brazilians. In that same year she was invited to attend the 23rd International Expo in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (USA), which annually brings together artists from different parts of the world that have the African culture as a basis for their production.

In 2009, Marcia Leivas was invited back by the October Gallery, the organizer of the exhibition in Philadelphia and presents her second single exhibition, this time with a universal theme: peace. For this representation, she joined the symbology of Candomble, one of the most worshiped religions in Brazil, and the efforts of ordinary citizens interested in preserving the values of peace in their daily lives. From this participation on, the artist starts a business relationship with this gallery, which is nowadays the official representative of their work in North America continent.Marcia Leivas was born in Rio de Janeiro and is almost a self-taught person. She only had six months of classes at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage, a renowned private institution in Rio de Janeiro, which hosted great artists and intellectuals during 30 years of activities. At school, in 1989, she assimilates the basics and begins to give perspective, volume and light to her plastic expressions. In that year, she moved to Salvador, Bahia, where she lives up to now.

In 2001, she assumes a commitment to art and began attending workshops in drawing and painting at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM), and remains there for three years being guided by the teachers Paulo Pereira and Yuri Sacramento.Since then, the artist has been producing her own exhibitions, participating in collective exhibitions and developing projects produced for teenagers from public schools and for community leaders as well. These works blend art, journalism and social discussion. Among the projects for 2011 is the publication of an art book with the history of the transgressions of the first black Brazilian clown, Benjamin de Oliveira.
